Something Like Summer author Jay Bell has won his first Lambda Literary Award after being named a finalist these past two years.

Bell won the award for his novel, Kamikaze Boys, in the awards’ Best Romance category.

Blue Seraph is producing the adaptation of Something Like Summer, which was a finalist in last year’s Lambda Literary Foundation awards, with writer Carlos Pedraza penning the script, and J.T. Tepnapa set to direct the feature film.

“We’re proud to be associated with such a talented author’s work,” Pedraza said, “and we look forward to the upcoming adaptation of his acclaimed novel.”

Kamikaze Boys tells the story of two rebellious boys who fall in love and strike back against those who torment them. Bell wrote the book to inspire young people facing similar challenges.

“Hopefully, others going through similar situations can take refuge in the pages of my books, just as I once hid in the pages of so many novels,” he said. “I’d like to say thank you to the Lambda Literary Foundation for working so hard to support and celebrate gay literature.”

KAMIKAZE BOYS is Jay Bell's follow-up novel to 'Something Like Summer,' and his second Lambda Literary Award finalist.

The awards celebrate achievement in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender writing for books published in 2012. Winners were announced June 3 in a ceremony in New York City.

Books from major mainstream publishers and from academic presses, from both long-established and new LGBT publishers, as well as from emerging publish-on-demand technologies, make up the finalists for the “Lammys.”

The other books nominated in the Lambdas’ Best Romance category were:

  • The Celestial, by Barry Brennessel
  • Don’t Let Me Go, by J.H. Trumble
  • The Nothingness of Ben, by Brad Boney
  • Toughskins, by William Masswa

Bell has also written two sequels to Something Like Summer, the novels Something Like Winter and Something Like Autumn. Both are available on the author’s website or from Amazon.com.
